UP Calculation Methods (2026/2027)

The University of Pretoria (UP) uses the NSC 7-Point Rating Scale. Your percentage for each subject is converted into a level (1-7), and these levels are added together.

Official UP Points Table

UP uses the standard NSC 7-Point scale.

NSC Percentage UP Level (Points) Description
80% - 100% 7 Outstanding Achievement
70% - 79% 6 Meritorious Achievement
60% - 69% 5 Substantial Achievement
50% - 59% 4 Moderate Achievement
40% - 49% 3 Adequate Achievement
30% - 39% 2 Elementary Achievement
0% - 29% 1 Not Achieved

Important: Unlike UCT, UP does not use raw percentages. A mark of 79% gives you 6 points, while 80% gives you 7 points. Life Orientation is excluded (0 points).

Frequently Asked Questions

When do UP applications for 2027 open?
Applications for the University of Pretoria typically open on 1 April 2026 for the 2027 intake.

Closing Dates:
  • Veterinary Science: 31 May 2026
  • All other Faculties: 30 June 2026
Do I need to write NBTs for UP?
Generally, No. Unlike UCT, the University of Pretoria has removed the National Benchmark Test (NBT) as a requirement for admission to most undergraduate programmes (including Health Sciences).

Note: Always check the latest faculty brochure as this policy can change for specific research or placement purposes.
Does Life Orientation count at UP?
No. While Life Orientation (LO) is a compulsory subject to pass Grade 12, UP excludes it entirely from the APS calculation. You must base your score on your other 6 best subjects.
What points do I get for marks below 40%?
UP awards points for lower marks using the NSC scale:
  • 30% - 39%: Level 2 (2 Points)
  • 0% - 29%: Level 1 (1 Point, assuming the subject is not failed completely in a way that voids matric)
Note: UCT gives 0 points for these ranges, but UP follows the standard NSC levels.
What is the UP application fee?
The application fee for 2026/2027 application is R300 for all applicants. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid before your application is processed.
Can I study at UP with Maths Literacy?
Yes, but your options are limited. You can apply for degrees in the Faculty of Humanities, Law (BA Law), and the Faculty of Education.

However, Commerce, Science, Engineering, and Health Sciences strictly require Pure Mathematics.
Do I apply with Grade 11 or Grade 12 marks?
You apply using your final Grade 11 results to receive conditional admission. Your final acceptance will depend on your Grade 12 NSC results meeting the requirements.
What if my APS is too low for my course?
UP offers Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECP), such as the BSc Extended Programme. These have lower APS requirements (e.g., 26-28) but take one year longer to complete.

Just a Quick Note Before You Go

We built this tool to help you navigate the admissions maze, but it's important to remember that your future is more than just a number on a screen. Think of this result as your personal admission compass, a great starting point for your admission journey, but not the final finish line.

Universities are dynamic, and while we strive for 100% accuracy, their selection criteria often involves factors a calculator can't see, such as:

  • Portfolios, interviews, or NBT results
  • Specific subject minimums and combos
  • Language proficiency requirements
  • Space availability for your desired course

Our Advice: Use this score to narrow your search, then verify the latest facts directly with the university's prospectus.
