SPU Calculation Methods (2026/2027)

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) calculates your Admission Point Score (APS) using all seven subjects from your National Senior Certificate (NSC). Unlike standard calculators, SPU utilizes a specialized 8-point scale and awards bonus points for core academic performance.

Bonus Points System:

SPU awards extra weight to Mathematics and the language taken as the Home Language (HL). Achievement Level 5 (60%) or higher adds 2 bonus points, while Levels 3 and 4 (40%-59%) add 1 bonus point.

Life Orientation (LO) Rule:

LO is included but follows a capped scale: 90%+ (4 pts), 80-89% (3 pts), 70-79% (2 pts), and 60-69% (1 pt). Marks below 60% award 0 points for LO.

How do the bonus points for Mathematics work?
SPU awards additional weight to Pure Mathematics and your Home Language. You receive +2 bonus points for a score of 60% or higher, and +1 bonus point for a score between 40% and 59%. These are added directly to your total APS.
Can I apply to SPU with Mathematical Literacy?
Yes, Mathematical Literacy is accepted for many Humanities degrees, Education (Foundation Phase), and Management diplomas. However, it is strictly not accepted for BSc Data Science or other science-heavy programs.
What is the minimum APS for a Bachelor's Degree?
Most Bachelor's Degrees at SPU require a minimum APS of 30 (calculated across all 7 subjects including LO and bonuses). Highly competitive programs like BSc Data Science generally require an APS of 35 or higher.
Does SPU require the NBT?
Yes. Sol Plaatje University generally requires all undergraduate applicants to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT). The results are used alongside your matric marks to determine final placement, especially in oversubscribed programs.
