Frequently Asked Questions

When do CUT applications for 2027 open?
Applications for the Central University of Technology typically open in May 2026 for the 2027 academic intake. Unlike KZN universities, CUT applications are submitted directly through the official CUT online portal.
How does CUT calculate its Admission Point Score (APS)?
CUT calculates your APS by totaling the achievement levels (1–7) of your six best academic subjects. A single bonus point is added for Life Orientation if you achieve a level 4 (50%) or higher.
Does CUT count Life Orientation in the APS?
Yes, but it is capped. Life Orientation is given a fixed score of 1 point toward your total APS, provided you pass the subject with at least 50%. Scoring 90% in LO still only counts as 1 point at CUT.
What is the minimum APS for admission to CUT?
The general minimum for direct entry into most programs is 27 points. However, individual programs in Engineering and Health Sciences often require a much higher score for competitive ranking.
What happens if I score between 22 and 26 points?
Applicants scoring in the 22–26 point range do not meet the direct entry minimum but may be invited to write a selection test. Your performance in this test will determine if you are accepted into your chosen program.
Do I need to write the NBT for CUT?
Yes. All first-year applicants to CUT are generally required to have written the National Benchmark Test (NBT) before registration. The results are used for placement and to determine if you need additional academic support.
Can I apply for Engineering with Math Literacy?
No. All programs in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT strictly require Pure Mathematics. Mathematical Literacy is only considered for specific diplomas in the Humanities and Management Sciences.
Is English a mandatory subject for the CUT calculation?
Yes. Proficiency in English is a core requirement for all CUT programs. Most courses require a minimum of Level 4 (50%) in English for admission consideration.
What is the application fee for CUT?
A non-refundable application fee (typically R100 for online applications) is required for all new undergraduate applicants. You must upload proof of payment to the application portal for your submission to be processed.
How do I track my CUT application status?
You can track your application status by logging into the CUT Student iEnabler portal using the student number and PIN provided to you via email/SMS after your initial application.

Just a Quick Note Before You Go

We built this tool to help you navigate the admissions maze, but it's important to remember that your future is more than just a number on a screen. Think of this result as your personal admission compass, a great starting point for your admission journey, but not the final finish line.

Universities are dynamic, and while we strive for 100% accuracy, their selection criteria often involves factors a calculator can't see, such as:

  • Portfolios, interviews, or NBT results
  • Specific subject minimums and combos
  • Language proficiency requirements
  • Space availability for your desired course

Our Advice: Use this score to narrow your search, then verify the latest facts directly with the university's prospectus.
