UNISA Calculation Methods (2026/2027)

The University of South Africa (UNISA) calculates your Admission Point Score (APS) using all seven subjects from your National Senior Certificate (NSC). Points are awarded based on a standard 7-point rating scale, and admission is determined by a competitive ranking system.

Official UNISA Points Table

Standard NSC 7-Point Rating Scale

NSC Percentage UNISA Level (Points) Achievement Description
80% - 100% 7 Outstanding Achievement
70% - 79% 6 Meritorious Achievement
60% - 69% 5 Substantial Achievement
50% - 59% 4 Moderate Achievement
40% - 49% 3 Adequate Achievement
30% - 39% 2 Elementary Achievement
0% - 29% 1 Not Achieved
Life Orientation (LO) Rule: UNISA is unique in that it includes Life Orientation in the final APS calculation for nearly all qualifications. Your total score is calculated out of 49 points (7 subjects × 7 maximum points). Admission is not automatic and depends on a ranking system that factors in academic performance and social weighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do UNISA applications for 2027 open?
Applications for undergraduate qualifications (Higher Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees) typically open in August 2026 for the 2027 academic year. Most undergraduate application periods are brief, often closing by mid-October.
What is the UNISA application fee?
The non-refundable application fee for first-time UNISA applicants is R150.00 for online and self-help applications. Applications will not be processed until this fee is paid and proof of payment is uploaded.
Does UNISA count Life Orientation in the APS?
Yes. Unlike many other South African universities, UNISA calculates your APS using all seven subjects, which strictly includes Life Orientation. This means your maximum possible APS is 49.
What is the minimum APS for a Bachelor's Degree?
Most Bachelor's Degrees at UNISA require a minimum APS of 21, along with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) degree endorsement. Some specialized degrees, like those in Accounting Sciences, have higher subject-specific requirements.
Can I study at UNISA with Mathematical Literacy?
Yes, Mathematical Literacy is accepted for many programs, including Law (LLB), Humanities, and certain Management diplomas. However, it often requires a higher percentage (e.g., 60%–70%) compared to Pure Mathematics.
What is the "Social Weighting" in UNISA selection?
UNISA does not select students based on marks alone. The ranking system also considers social weighting factors such as race, gender, disability status, and the socio-economic quintile of the school you attended.
What is the minimum APS for a Higher Certificate?
Higher Certificates generally have the lowest entry requirements, starting at an APS of 15. These programs are designed as "bridging" routes for students who do not yet meet Diploma or Degree requirements.
How do I check my UNISA application status?
You can track your application online via the UNISA student status portal using your student number or a combination of your ID number, surname, and date of birth. Outcomes are typically released in waves after the closing date.
Does meeting the APS guarantee admission?
No. Meeting the minimum APS only makes you eligible for consideration. Because UNISA has limited spaces in many programs, they use a competitive ranking system to select the top applicants until the program is full.

Just a Quick Note Before You Go

We built this tool to help you navigate the admissions maze, but it's important to remember that your future is more than just a number on a screen. Think of this result as your personal admission compass, a great starting point for your admission journey, but not the final finish line.

Universities are dynamic, and while we strive for 100% accuracy, their selection criteria often involves factors a calculator can't see, such as:

  • Portfolios, interviews, or NBT results
  • Specific subject minimums and combos
  • Language proficiency requirements
  • Space availability for your desired course

Our Advice: Use this score to narrow your search, then verify the latest facts directly with the university's prospectus.
