How to Activate Your Fundi Card, Find Your Card Number, and Access Your Money

4 July 2026

Getting a Fundi Card in your hands is only half the job. The part that confuses most students is what happens next.

The card doesn't work straight out of the envelope. It needs to be activated in person. Your cash allowance doesn't load onto the card itself. Your accommodation pocket works differently from what most people expect. And if you don't know about the pocket system before you try to use the card for the first time, you'll think something is broken when it's actually working exactly as it's supposed to.

This guide covers all of it, in the order you'll actually need it.

What the Fundi Card Is and Why It Works the Way It Does

The Fundi Card isn't a regular debit card. It has multiple pockets, each one assigned to a specific expense category. You might have a food pocket, an accommodation pocket, a textbook pocket, and a tuition pocket, all sitting on one card.

The money in each pocket can only be spent on what it was allocated for. Your food pocket works at Shoprite and Checkers and selected campus food merchants. Your textbook pocket works at approved book suppliers. You can't mix them up, and that's intentional.

Fundi manages funds on behalf of institutions and bursary sponsors, and the pocket structure is how they make sure the money goes where it was supposed to go. It's not a design flaw. It's the whole point of the card.

Activation Has to Happen In Person. You Can't Do It Online.

This catches a lot of students off guard. You can't activate your Fundi Card through the portal or by following a link in an email. You need to physically go to a Fundi campus office.

When you get there, bring your original South African ID or passport. Not a copy, the original. A Fundi representative will verify your identity, swipe your card on the terminal, enter your student number, and then hand the terminal to you to create a PIN. You'll confirm the PIN once and that's it. Card activated, ready to use.

To find your nearest Fundi office, go to fundi.co.za and check the Branches page. Most universities and TVET colleges with significant Fundi student populations have an office on or very close to campus.

Your Fundi Card Number

The card number is the 16-digit number on the front of your physical card. Same position as on any bank card.

You'll need this number when making USSD payments, like paying accommodation through the Fundi merchant system. Keep it somewhere safe. Don't photograph it and send it to anyone. Don't share it in a WhatsApp group, even with people you trust.

If you need to view your card details through the portal, log into mycard.fundi.co.za with your student number and PIN and check your dashboard.

Your Cash Allowance Does Not Load Onto the Card

This is the most common source of confusion for Fundi Card students. People check their card balance, see that it's less than expected, and assume money is missing. Usually it isn't.

Cash allowances, including transport money, are not loaded onto the Fundi Card. They're transferred via EFT directly to your personal bank account. To receive those transfers, you need to log into the Fundi Card portal at mycard.fundi.co.za and upload your personal banking details.

The account you upload must be in your name. Once Fundi verifies the details, they'll transfer your cash allowance to that account at the intervals set by your institution or sponsor.

If you haven't uploaded your banking details yet, that's why your cash allowance hasn't arrived. Log in, upload them, and give it a few days.

How Accommodation Works on the Fundi Card

Your accommodation pocket is ring-fenced specifically for housing costs. It won't work at a supermarket or a clothing store, it only pays for accommodation.

If your residence or landlord is a registered Fundi merchant, you pay them through the USSD system. Dial star 134 star 87646 hash or star 120 star 3385 hash on your phone. Select Pay Merchant from the menu. Enter the 7-digit merchant code your accommodation provider gives you. Then enter your card number, confirm your PIN, type the amount, and confirm.

You'll get a reference number when the payment goes through. Screenshot it or write it down and give it to your accommodation provider as proof of payment.

If your accommodation provider isn't a registered Fundi merchant, this process won't work and you'll need to speak to your campus financial aid office to sort out the payment structure. That's not something you can fix from your side directly, it has to go through the institution.

If Your Card Balance Is Showing Zero

Before you call Fundi, call your campus bursar or financial aid office first.

Fundi doesn't load funds onto the card on its own initiative. Money only appears on your card after your institution, sponsor, or bursar sends a formal instruction to Fundi to disburse funds. If that instruction hasn't been sent, or if there's a delay on the institution's side, your balance will be zero regardless of what Fundi shows on their end.

At the start of a new term this is especially common. The system gets backed up. If a few days have passed and funds still haven't appeared after your institution confirmed they've processed the allocation, then escalate to Fundi at FundiCard@fundi.co.za or call 0860 44 33 44.

Checking Your Balance

Three ways to do it. Log into mycard.fundi.co.za and check each pocket individually on your dashboard. Dial star 134 star 87646 hash on your phone and your balance will come back via SMS. Or visit a Fundi campus office and ask a representative to check it for you.

If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen

Block it immediately. Don't wait. You can block the card through mycard.fundi.co.za, by calling 0860 44 33 44, or in person at a campus office with your ID. Once it's blocked, nobody can spend the funds. If you find the card again, you can unblock it through the same channels.
