NSFAS Required Documents Checklist 2026

Updated April 2026 · 6 min read

Missing or incorrect documents are one of the most common reasons NSFAS applications are rejected. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything before you submit. If your application has already been rejected, see our guide on how to fix a rejected NSFAS application.

File Naming Tip

Rename files using lowercase letters and hyphens only to avoid portal upload errors. Keep each file under 5MB.

Standard Documents — Required for All Applicants

Every NSFAS applicant must submit these documents regardless of their situation.

South African ID Document

A clear copy of your green ID book or smart ID card. Both sides if smart ID. Must be valid and not expired.

Proof of Registration

Official proof that you are registered or conditionally accepted at a public university or TVET college for the current academic year.

Proof of Household Income

Recent payslips (last 3 months) for all employed household members. If unemployed, a signed affidavit confirming no income. SASSA recipients must include their SASSA letter.

Parents or Guardian's ID Documents

Clear copies of ID documents for both parents or legal guardians. Required even if parents are deceased — in which case death certificates are needed instead.

NSFAS Consent Form

The official NSFAS consent and authorisation form, signed by the applicant and parent or guardian. This authorises NSFAS to verify your information with SARS and Home Affairs.

Special Case Documents

Only required if they apply to your specific situation.

Disability Annexure A

Students with disabilities

Required for students with disabilities. This form unlocks the N+2 rule, giving you two extra years of funding instead of one. Must be completed and signed by a registered medical practitioner.

Learn about the N+2 rule

Orphan & Vulnerable Child Declaration

Orphans & vulnerable children

Required for applicants who are orphans or have been legally declared a vulnerable child by a social worker or court of law.

Legal Guardianship Proof

Students with legal guardians

If you live with a guardian who is not your biological parent, you must provide a court order or a legitimate will confirming the guardianship arrangement.

Death Certificates

Deceased parents

If one or both parents are deceased, you must submit their death certificates in place of ID documents.

Retrenchment or UIF UI-19 Form

Recently unemployed parents

If a parent or guardian was recently retrenched, you must provide their retrenchment letter and/or a UIF UI-19 form as proof of changed income circumstances.
