What the University of Reading Is Actually Offering
Up to 400 scholarships per year at £6,000 annually. That makes this one of the UK's largest undergraduate scholarship programmes of its kind — and the scale matters, because it means your odds are meaningfully better here than in most competitive UK scholarships.
What the £6,000 covers: living and maintenance costs only. It does not reduce your tuition fees. For international students paying full overseas tuition (typically £22,000–£26,000 per year at Reading), this scholarship covers a portion of your living costs, not your fee liability. Plan your overall budget accordingly.
The scholarship runs for up to four years provided you maintain your academic standing and complete the one mandatory requirement: the Development and Impact Record, an annual self-reflection log tracking your sustainability engagement. Every other element of the programme — lectures, leadership masterclasses, conference participation, career events — is optional but strongly encouraged.
The year-by-year development scheme in brief:
Year 1: Online course, Sustainability Fundamentals lecture series, RED Sustainable Action Award
Year 2: Leadership masterclasses from Henley Business School, Global Sustainability Challenges (real-world interdisciplinary projects)
Year 3: Sustainability dissertation focus, Global Sustainability Leaders Scholars Conference
Throughout: Careers support, industry mentoring, community events, alumni network access
Is the Global Sustainability Leaders Scholarship Right for You?
Apply if you are:
Holding or expecting an offer from the University of Reading for undergraduate entry in 2026/27 — Year 1 or Foundation Year
Achieving AAA at A-Level (or equivalent international qualifications) — or AAB if you qualify for a contextualised offer
Genuinely interested in sustainability as a theme across your degree, not just as a line on an application. The programme is active and requires annual engagement and reflection
An international student who has independently planned for tuition fees — this scholarship supplements your living costs, it does not replace a tuition funding plan
Applying through Clearing? You are still eligible if you accept a Reading offer through Clearing and meet the grade requirements
Do not waste your time applying if:
You have not yet received or accepted an offer from the University of Reading — the application process is invite-only and only open to Reading offer holders
Your A-Level grades (or equivalent) are below AAA, unless you are eligible for a contextualised AAB offer
You are applying for postgraduate study — this scholarship is for undergraduate programmes only
You are not willing to maintain the annual Development and Impact Record — it is the only mandatory element but it is non-negotiable for continuing to receive the scholarship
Tips Nobody Tells You
1: Apply in Tranche 1 or 2 — do not wait for the September deadline
With 400 scholarships available per year and three tranches of selection, the early tranches are your best window. Tranche 1 closed in March and Tranche 2 in June — both are past for this cycle, which means the 3 September 2026 Tranche 3 deadline is your only remaining entry point for 2026/27. For future reference: apply in March, not September. The earlier you apply, the less competition you face within that tranche, and the more time the University has to process your application. Tranche 3 is not a lesser round — 400 total scholarships are split across all three — but the remaining pool after two tranches is smaller.
2: The scholarship is not tied to a sustainability-specific degree — any undergraduate programme qualifies
This is the most underappreciated feature of the scheme and the one most students miss. You do not have to study Environmental Science, Climate Science, or Geography to qualify. Reading offers this scholarship to students in Law, Psychology, Finance, Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, Food Science, Languages, and every other undergraduate subject. If you have the grades and the interest in sustainability, your degree subject is not a barrier. The development programme is deliberately cross-disciplinary. A Business student who cares about sustainable finance, or an Engineering student interested in green infrastructure, is exactly the kind of scholar this programme was built for.
3: The Development and Impact Record is assessed — treat it seriously from day one
Most scholarship recipients engage deeply with optional activities in Year 1 and then coast on compliance in Years 2 and 3. The record is reviewed periodically and must show real evidence of activities and forward planning — not a checkbox exercise. The scholars who get the most from this programme (career connections, industry mentoring, alumni relationships) are those who engage genuinely with the optional components rather than treating the annual record as a minimum obligation. The scholarship's real ROI — beyond the £6,000 per year — is the leadership network, the Henley Business School masterclasses, and the employer relationships built through the careers programme. Those benefits go to scholars who show up.
Why This Scholarship Is Worth Pursuing Despite the Competition
The University of Reading is one of the UK's leading research universities with particular global recognition in climate science, meteorology, and environmental sustainability. Its academic reputation in these fields is not marketing — Reading's climate scientists have contributed to IPCC reports and lead internationally recognised research programmes.
For international students in particular, the combination of Reading's sustainability research environment, the Henley Business School leadership component, and a £6,000 annual living supplement — on top of a Reading undergraduate degree — represents genuine value. Over four years the scholarship totals £24,000. That is real money toward living costs in the UK, attached to a structured leadership and sustainability development programme that most universities simply do not offer at undergraduate level.
