Before Anything Else

The Marshall Scholarship is exclusively for American citizens. If you are reading this from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, or anywhere outside the United States, this particular award is not accessible to you. We are covering it for our readers in the African diaspora who hold US citizenship or are studying at US universities and may not be aware of what this scholarship offers.

If that is you, keep reading. This is one of the most valuable fully funded opportunities available to young Americans and it does not get the attention it deserves outside of elite university circles.

What the Marshall Scholarship Covers

The Marshall Scholarship sends outstanding young Americans to the United Kingdom for graduate study, fully funded. The programme was established by the British government in 1953 as a thank-you to the United States for the Marshall Plan that helped rebuild Europe after World War II. That history matters because it explains the scholarship's core purpose: building lasting understanding between the US and the UK through the exchange of future leaders.

The scholarship covers the full cost of your graduate studies in the UK for either one year or two years depending on which pathway you apply for. You choose which UK university and which programme you want to pursue. The funding follows you to whatever institution accepts you.

Full details of exactly what is covered financially are in the 2027 Rules for Candidates document on the Marshall Commission website. Review that document carefully before you apply.

Is the Marshall Scholarship Right for You?

The Marshall Commission is looking for a specific kind of person and being honest about that saves everyone time.

You are the right candidate if:

You are a US citizen who completed your undergraduate degree at an American university. You have an exceptional academic record, the kind that puts you genuinely among the strongest graduates your institution has produced. Beyond grades, you have demonstrated real leadership, whether through community involvement, research, public service, entrepreneurship, or any other avenue where you have shown you can move people and ideas forward. You are also someone who has thought seriously about how studying in the UK connects to a larger professional or civic purpose, one that contributes to better understanding between the US and the UK over time.

Walk away if:

You are not a US citizen. You are applying to more than one region simultaneously, which results in automatic disqualification. You are trying to apply for both the one-year and two-year scholarship at the same time, another automatic disqualification. Or your undergraduate institution is unwilling or unable to endorse your application, because without that institutional endorsement, your application simply cannot move forward.

One regional rule worth knowing: you can only apply in the region where you permanently live, work, or study. Trying to game a different region because you think your chances are better there will get you disqualified immediately.

Understanding the Endorsement Process (This Is Where Most People Get Caught Out)

The Marshall Scholarship does not work like most graduate funding applications where you apply directly and wait. There is an institutional layer that trips up a lot of strong candidates who leave it too late.

Here is how it works. You complete your application online and submit it to your undergraduate institution, not to the Marshall Commission. Your institution then reviews it and decides whether to endorse you. If they choose to endorse you, they add a letter of endorsement and submit the full package to the appropriate regional committee.

Your institution can submit a maximum of 24 applications total. If your university is popular for Marshall applicants and the spots fill up, being excellent is not enough. You need to be among the top candidates your institution is willing to put forward.

This means one thing practically: contact your undergraduate institution's scholarship advisor now, not in September. Many universities have internal deadlines for Marshall applications that fall weeks before the official 29 September deadline. If you miss the internal deadline, you miss the scholarship regardless of how strong your application is.

3 Tips to Strengthen Your Application

1. Talk to your institution's scholarship office today, not next month

Everything about this application flows through your undergraduate institution. The endorsement, the submission, the internal deadline, all of it. And your university advisor needs time to review your materials, decide whether to endorse you, and prepare their letter. Walking in two weeks before the deadline with a finished application is not going to go well. Make an appointment this week, find out your institution's internal timeline, and build your preparation around that date.

2. The selection committee is not just looking for the smartest person in the room

Marshall Scholars are selected on three things: potential to excel as scholars, leadership ability, and capacity to contribute to improved UK-US understanding. That third criterion is the one most applicants underweight. Your personal statement and essays need to show that you have thought about what studying in the UK means beyond the academic credential. What specific experience, perspective, or work will you bring back to the US? How does your time there contribute to the long-term relationship between the two countries? Committees read hundreds of brilliant applications. The ones that advance take that question seriously.

3. Your three recommenders need to know what the Marshall is actually selecting for

You need three letters of recommendation and they must be submitted through your institution's system by the 29 September deadline. Do not simply ask three impressive people and hope for the best. Brief your recommenders specifically on what the Marshall Commission values: scholarship, leadership, and the potential to strengthen US-UK ties. A letter that only talks about your GPA and research output is not doing the full job. The strongest letters speak to your character, your leadership in action, and your readiness to represent American thinking in a British academic environment.

How to Apply

The process has more moving parts than most scholarships because of the institutional layer. Work through it in this order.

  1. Read the 2027 Rules for Marshall Scholarship Candidates and the 2027 Statements documents on the Marshall Commission website before you do anything else. These are not optional reading.

  2. Contact your undergraduate institution's scholarship or fellowship advisor immediately. Ask about the internal institutional deadline for Marshall applications, which is almost certainly earlier than 29 September.

  3. Register on the ASAMS online application system. Note that your undergraduate university advisor also needs to register and there can be processing delays of two to three working days, so do not leave this until the last minute.

  4. Complete your full online application including all required essays, personal statements, and supporting materials. Decide at this stage whether you are applying for the one-year or two-year scholarship. You cannot apply for both.

  5. Identify which region you are applying in, either where you permanently live, work, or study. You can only apply in one region.

  6. Submit your completed application to your undergraduate institution by 29 September 2026 at 5:00 PM in the time zone of your endorsing institution. Your three recommenders must also submit their letters by this same deadline.

  7. Your endorsing institution then reviews your application and, if they choose to endorse you, submits the full package including their letter of endorsement to the regional committee by 1 October 2026 at 5:00 PM.

  8. Applications are reviewed at eight regional centres across the US. Shortlisted candidates are notified by early to mid-November and invited to interview. Final selections are announced shortly after interviews.

  9. If selected, you will receive written notification and must accept or decline within five days. Awards are conditional on receiving an offer to study at a UK university.

The VarsityToolkit Take

Here is what the Marshall Scholarship actually is underneath the prestige: it is the British government's ongoing investment in the next generation of American leaders, specifically the ones they believe will help keep the relationship between the two countries strong and productive over the coming decades.

That framing matters because it tells you exactly what kind of candidate gets selected. Not just the highest GPA. Not just the most impressive research output. The person who combines genuine intellectual ability with a track record of leadership and a convincing sense of where they are going and why the UK is part of that journey.

For African diaspora readers who are US citizens and studying at American universities, the Marshall sits alongside the Rhodes and the Gates Cambridge as one of the three most prestigious fully funded UK graduate scholarships available from the United States. It is less well known than the Rhodes outside of top university circles, which means the applicant pool, while deeply competitive, is smaller than you might expect given the quality of the award.

The 29 September deadline looks far away right now. Your institution's internal deadline probably does not. Find out what it is before the end of this week.
