Required Documents
Since nominations are submitted by school counsellors rather than students directly, the documentation process involves both the school and the student. Materials submitted as part of the nomination include:
Scholastic report prepared by school officials, covering academic performance and transcript
Extracurricular activities record
Two essays completed by the student

Any additional materials required by the regional selection committee

Tips Nobody Tells You
1. Your school counsellor is the gatekeeper to this scholarship, and most students never have the conversation.
Since no individual can apply directly, your school counsellor must choose to nominate you and then submit all required materials through the Foundation's portal. Many eligible students never become nominees simply because they never told their counsellor they were interested. The Foundation explicitly states that prior interest in UVA should not be a factor in nomination decisions, but expressing that you want to be considered for national scholarships generally is a completely appropriate conversation to have. 3. The selection timeline runs entirely separately from UVA admissions, you need to manage both tracks simultaneously and neither waits for the other.
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation selection process, from nomination through regional interviews to final selection in late February, runs on a completely independent timeline from the University of Virginia's undergraduate admissions process. The Foundation does not have access to your Common Application. You must apply separately for UVA admission and ensure your Early application is in before the admissions office conducts its additional review of nominees. Failing to apply for UVA admission on time can effectively remove you from scholarship consideration even if your nomination is strong. Track both deadlines carefully and treat them as parallel obligations, not sequential ones.
