What the CGI Scholarship Is Actually Offering
This is a fully funded Master's programme — not a partial bursary, not a fee waiver. CGI covers everything from the moment you land in Bangkok to the day you graduate.
Here is what the scholarship actually pays for, broken down clearly:
Tuition and all academic fees — credit fees, laboratory costs, refresher course fees, enrollment fee, thesis fee, and thesis document production costs. Every academic cost is zero to you.
Round-trip airfare — economy class, home country to Bangkok and back
Visa fee — covered
First settlement allowance — a one-time payment when you arrive to cover initial living setup costs
Relocation allowance — additional support for your move
Accommodation — CGI provides on-campus housing for scholarship scholars
Monthly stipend — a living allowance paid each month for the duration of the programme
Book allowance — a dedicated fund for academic materials
Health insurance — covered for the duration of your studies
Before the two-year academic programme begins, all scholars complete a six-week refresher course starting in June 2027. This is compulsory and covers foundational science and orientation into the CGI research environment. Think of it as a bridge to level the academic playing field between scholars from different countries and educational backgrounds.
One important structural point: the scholarship is reviewed annually. If your academic performance drops below the standard CGI sets, the scholarship can be terminated. This is not a ceremonial clause — CGI enforces it. You are expected to perform throughout, not just to gain admission.
Is the CGI Scholarship Right for You?
Apply if you are:
Under 30 years old with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Medical Technology, Pharmacy, or Pharmaceutical Sciences — or a closely related field
Someone with genuine hands-on laboratory research experience — this is listed as a requirement, not a preference. If you have never set foot in a research lab, this scholarship will be a difficult application and a harder two years
Holding a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 — note this is not a high bar in isolation, but CGI will assess your overall profile including your research experience and statement of purpose
Able to demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, or a letter from your university confirming English as the medium of instruction
Genuinely interested in environmental health, toxicology, or chemical sciences — not just looking for any funded Master's. The programme is research-intensive and highly specialised
Ready to write a strong, specific statement of purpose explaining exactly why you want to study at CGI and which research area aligns with your background
Do not waste your time applying if:
You are 30 or older — there are no exceptions to this age limit, regardless of how strong your academic profile is
Your Bachelor's degree is in Engineering, Business, Law, Social Sciences, Arts, or any field with no overlap with the biological or chemical sciences
You have no laboratory research experience — a classroom-only science background will not satisfy this requirement
Your GPA is below 2.75 — the minimum is clearly stated and there is no indication that exceptional research experience overrides it
You are looking for a taught, coursework-heavy Master's — CGI is a research institute. The degree is built around thesis research, not lectures and exams
You are not prepared to live and study in Bangkok for the full two years of the programme — there is no distance or hybrid option
Tips Nobody Tells You
1: Your statement of purpose is the real application — treat it that way
Most applicants spend the majority of their time worrying about their GPA and English scores. Those are just the entrance ticket. What CGI is actually evaluating you on — especially since they receive applications from candidates worldwide — is your statement of purpose. This is where the majority of applications fall flat. A weak statement reads like this: "I am passionate about environmental science and believe CGI will help me achieve my goals." That tells the admissions committee nothing useful. A strong statement names the specific research area at CGI you want to work in, references the type of laboratory work you have done that is directly relevant, and explains what research question you want to pursue during your Master's and why it matters. CGI has three distinct programmes. Before you write a single word of your statement, read the research areas published under your target programme on the CGI website. Then write your statement to that specific programme, not to CGI in general.
2: African applicants use a different form — and most people get this wrong
CGI has two application portals. One is specifically for citizens of Colombo Plan member countries (https://admission.cgi.ac.th/cgiandcps-scholarship). The other is for everyone else (https://admission.cgi.ac.th/cgi-scholarship). Not a single African country is a current Colombo Plan member. The 28 member countries are concentrated in Asia and the Pacific — Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and every other African nation are outside this group. If you are an African applicant and you accidentally submit via the Colombo Plan portal, your application will almost certainly be rejected or ignored on administrative grounds alone. 3: Get your three recommendation letters sorted in July, not in August
The application deadline is 31 August 2026. That seems like you have time. You do not. The document that kills the most otherwise-strong applications in competitive scholarships is the recommendation letter — specifically, the delays in getting academics and supervisors to write and submit them on time. CGI requires three recommendation letters. If you are at an African university, you know how long it takes to get a response from a Head of Department, a thesis supervisor, or a Dean. Start identifying and formally requesting your three recommenders in July — before the academic mid-semester rush hits. Brief each recommender specifically on what CGI looks for: research ability, laboratory experience, academic potential, and character. Give them a draft of your statement of purpose so their letter reinforces your narrative rather than contradicting it.
Why This Scholarship Is Worth Pursuing Despite the Competition
Most people who come across this scholarship see "Thailand" and mentally file it as a regional Asian opportunity. That is a mistake, and it is one that reduces the competition from African applicants significantly.
CGI is not a typical Thai university. It operates under the patronage of the Thai Royal Family and was specifically designed to function at the level of leading international research institutions. The programmes are fully English-medium. The research published by CGI faculty appears in international peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and PubMed — the same databases your future employers and PhD programmes will look at when evaluating your academic record.
For African graduates working in environmental health, toxicology, or chemistry — fields where the African continent faces genuinely urgent challenges in water quality, industrial contamination, pharmaceutical access, and environmental degradation — a CGI Master's is directly applicable. This is not an abstract academic exercise. The research areas CGI specialises in are problems that affect communities across Africa every day.
The practical financial picture is also worth understanding clearly. Bangkok is a major city but is considerably more affordable than London, Tokyo, or even Johannesburg at postgraduate student living costs. With your accommodation covered, monthly stipend paid, and health insurance in place, your two years in Thailand are genuinely funded — not "funded except for the expensive parts" like some scholarships that cover only tuition.
There is one more thing worth saying plainly: a fully funded international Master's in a recognised research institution, with a published thesis in an indexed database, completed before the age of 30 — that credential opens doors to PhD programmes in Europe, North America, and Asia that a domestic Master's from many African institutions will not. The CGI scholarship is not just a degree. Used correctly, it is a career launchpad.
