What Bond University Is Actually Offering
Bond University is Australia's only private not-for-profit university, located on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It offers three distinct HDR scholarship categories, each with the same annual stipend of $34,315 AUD and each available for up to three years of full-time doctoral study.
The three scholarship categories are the Bond University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (BUPRS), awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential to both domestic and international students; the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, which covers general living costs for both domestic and international applicants through a competitive merit-based process; and the HDR Indigenous Scholarship, specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, which includes the stipend plus a 100 per cent fee waiver under the Australian Government RTP.
One eligibility detail that applies across all three categories is critical to understand upfront: if you have previously applied for a Bond HDR scholarship and were unsuccessful, you may submit one additional application outlining a change in circumstances. A second unsuccessful application means you are ineligible for all future scholarship rounds at Bond University. Choose when and how you apply carefully.
The application process runs in two stages: first an Expression of Interest, then a full application if your EOI is approved.
Is This Right for You?
Apply if you are:
Applying for a PhD or Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy at Bond University (research master's students are not eligible for any HDR scholarship)
Intending to study full-time for the duration of your programme
Someone who has already submitted a Bond University application for your programme before applying for the scholarship
Not currently holding an equivalent Australian Government award designed to offset HDR fees
An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with documented confirmation of status from a community organisation, if applying for the Indigenous Scholarship
Able to demonstrate first class honours, relevant industry experience, or other indicators of high academic merit, since Bond uses these factors in scholarship selection
Do not waste your time applying if:
You are applying for a research master's degree, HDR scholarships at Bond are explicitly not available to research master's students
You have already had two unsuccessful scholarship applications at Bond University, a second rejection makes you permanently ineligible for future rounds
You plan to study part-time, all scholarships require full-time enrolment
You have not yet submitted your Bond University programme application, the scholarship application requires this to already be completed
Required Documents
For the Expression of Interest and full application, you will need to prepare:
Official academic transcripts for all previously completed programmes, including evidence of results, evidence of completion, and information on the institution's grading system
Certified translations of any documents not written in English
Proof of English proficiency if English is not your first language
Curriculum vitae (CV) or LinkedIn profile URL, including any research publications or conference presentations
Research Project Proposal (developed in collaboration with your proposed supervisor), covering your research topic, proposed methodology, key literature and research questions, and the relevance of your research area
Students applying within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine must also prepare a whole-of-candidature budget developed with their proposed supervisor
For the Indigenous Scholarship: confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status under the common seal of a community organisation (or statutory declaration in exceptional circumstances)
Tips Nobody Tells You
1. Your Research Project Proposal is developed with your supervisor, which means finding your supervisor is actually the first real step in this process, not the EOI form.
Bond University explicitly states that Research Project Proposals are completed with the support of your proposed supervisor. This means before you can write a credible proposal, you need a supervisor who has agreed to support your research. The Bond HDR Unit uses your proposal to assess whether appropriate supervision and resources exist to justify your candidature. An applicant who submits a proposal without a confirmed supervisor is in a weaker position than one who has already had substantive conversations with a Bond faculty member about their research direction. Start identifying and contacting potential supervisors early, before the scholarship applications open on 1 August.
2. The two-application limit makes timing your application strategically important, do not apply before your profile is as strong as it can be.
Bond University's policy is unusually strict: if your first application fails, you get one more chance, and a second failure ends your eligibility permanently. This creates a real cost to applying before you are ready. If your academic record is strong but your research proposal is still underdeveloped, or you have not yet secured a supervisor's agreement, waiting until your next application cycle with a stronger package is a better strategy than submitting now and using up one of your two chances. Take the limit seriously and apply only when your full package, transcripts, proposal, supervisor relationship, and supporting documents, is genuinely competitive.
3. Bond's selection criteria explicitly include first class honours, Indigenous background, industry experience, and first-time doctoral candidacy, and these are not just tiebreakers.
The scholarship guidelines state that Bond has discretion to use these factors in selecting the most meritorious applicants. This means that a strong applicant with significant industry experience relevant to their research area, or someone who is undertaking a doctoral degree for the first time, may be prioritised over an applicant with slightly stronger grades but less contextual fit with these stated preferences. When preparing your CV and research proposal, give deliberate attention to documenting industry experience and making clear that this is your first doctoral programme if applicable. These details are not incidental background information, they are active selection considerations.

How to Apply
Identify a potential Bond University supervisor whose research interests align with yours and establish contact before applying
Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Bond's online application system, including a 250 to 500 word description of your proposed research topic
Wait for EOI outcome by email. Not all EOIs are approved to progress to the full application stage
If your EOI is approved, complete the full application and submit all required supporting documents
Submit your Research Project Proposal, developed in collaboration with your confirmed supervisor
Apply for the appropriate scholarship category: BUPRS, RTP, or Indigenous Scholarship, through the HDR Scholarships Committee process
