The VarsityToolkit Insider Tip
The Maths Literacy Penalty is real and consistent: Across every single faculty at VUT, students who write Mathematical Literacy instead of Mathematics (or Technical Mathematics) need 1 to 3 extra APS points to qualify for the same programme. For example, IT requires APS 26 with Maths but APS 28 with Maths Literacy — a 2-point gap that could be the difference between acceptance and rejection. If you are still in Grade 11 and have a choice, switching to Technical Mathematics (which is treated on par with pure Mathematics at VUT) may significantly widen your options. Additionally, the prospectus explicitly states that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance — early application is strongly advised since initial selection is based on Grade 11 or latest Grade 12 results, meaning a strong Grade 11 performance can secure your place before your final results are out.
