Picking the right course is only half the battle, if your JAMB subject combination is wrong, your dream course can slip away no matter how high you score in the UTME. Every year, thousands of candidates lose admission chances not because they failed the exam, but because they registered the wrong subjects. If you haven't yet decided on a course, read our guide on how to choose the right university course first, then come back here to lock in the subjects that match it.
Below is a breakdown of the JAMB subject combinations for some of the most popular courses in Nigerian universities. English Language is compulsory for every candidate, regardless of course, so it isn't repeated for each entry below.
Medicine and Surgery
Compulsory: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
This combination is fixed — no substitutions are accepted. A few universities (such as UDUSOK and UNIMAID) allow Mathematics in place of Physics, but this is the exception rather than the rule, so confirm with your target school before registration.
Nursing Science
Compulsory: Physics, Biology, Chemistry
Same science-heavy combination as Medicine, reflecting the clinical foundation nursing shares with medical studies.
Pharmacy
JAMB subject combinations are reviewed and can shift slightly from one admission cycle to the next, and individual universities sometimes layer on extra requirements beyond the JAMB baseline (for example, a specific O'Level credit or a preference for one optional subject over another). Always cross-check your final combination against the current JAMB brochure and your target institution's admission page before submitting your UTME registration — a five-minute check can save an entire admission cycle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't substitute a subject just because it seems similar. Agricultural Science is not an automatic stand-in for Biology, and Financial Accounting doesn't replace Economics in most combinations. Don't assume institution rules are uniform either. Two universities offering the same course can still accept different optional subjects. Also watch your O'Level requirements: your JAMB subjects and your WAEC/NECO credits need to align, so a perfect UTME combination won't help if your O'Level results are missing a required credit. And decide on your course before you register rather than after, since subject changes are only possible within a limited correction window.
If you're still weighing which course fits your strengths and interests, our guide on choosing the right university course walks through how to match your subjects, interests, and career goals before you commit to a JAMB combination.
